I started a free kindle promotion with KDP Select on a Sunday, and followed with another on Wednesday. I tested the promotion on a Sunday because my book relates to spiritual inspiration. My highest downloads occurred between 9am and 3pm. After 4pm is when downloads started to slow. I ended in total with about 200 downloads. My final 40 downloads happened in the last eight hours of the promotion.

Without market reports, I could not measure the traffic results of my promotion, but based on consistently watching my numbers snd promotion times, I concluded with these numbers to track traffic resources of my downloads

+68% my own promotion on my Facebook page
+22% free ebook sites
+10% Twitter

-LinkedIn didn’t work for me.

The sales didn’t rise as expected after the free promotion. My second free promotion was tested on a Wednesday, and downloads were much lower. The free campaign prompted me to conduct some market research and I noticed some things to help my marketing strategy.

During the first day of the promotion, my book hit #38 best seller in the kindle store top free 100, and it remains a top search for spiritual inspiration in Amazon kindle today. This also made me do some research on Amazon’s search engine, and compare to other books in my category. I seen how I faired against the competition, and noticed that I was in a great position. I also updateed my ebook to include social media contact and a quick message to readers in the beginning of the book to build my following.

I loved how the book moved during the promotion, but the main focus is to keep them moving beyond that. I studied how I can drive my book to the top in the Amazon search engine. The free promotion opened my mind to marketing strategies primarily the Google rankings, top authors and book sales in my genre, and SEO. I also noticed that a free promotion can be more successful and produce more sales if it is tied in with a cause, contest, or a strategic campaign that gets people involved.

All the best to yout book! Please shsre your thoughts or tell me about your KDP free fromo experiemce. Thanks for reading!
