After it was all said and done, the Seahawks only scored two field goals through 60 minutes of regulation. In my earlier article, I stated that the running game would be a huge factor for the 49ers, and that is what happened tonight in week 7.

49ers QB, Alex Smith was off target through the first quarter with overthrown passes and throwing too high. Seahawks moved the ball on their first drive and resulted in 3 points. The quarter ended with a tie at 3-3. This was how the 49ers started in their loss to Giants in week 6, except that was their total score through that entire game.

Marshawn Lynch (SEA) was highly productive early in the game. He leads the NFL with the most yards after contact (240+). He pounded defenders and ran through them as if he was on defense stopping the runner. He knocked them over and continued trucking. Rookie running back Robert Turbin relieved Marshawn Lynch late in the second quarter and kept the Seahawks moving forward, but it wasn’t enough to power them to a win.

Prior to not completing a 3rd and 17 drive with about 1:50 remaining in the 2nd, the Seahawks were 1 for 17 on converting third downs of 10+ yards, second worse in the NFL They eventually had another 3rd and 17 play they didn’t complete at the last two minutes of the fourth quarter. The 49ers returned a punt for 39 yards to start their final drive for the second quarter.

It wasn’t until 4:29 remaining in the third, when San Francisco scored their first TD with a pass to Tight End, Delanie Walker. FranK Gore gave them the boost they needed with a solid running effort and a series of first down runs gaining big yards. He finished with 131 rushing, also 5 receptions for 51. When a game is this tight, that is exactly what you need, a breakthrough play, or a turnover. Toward the closing of the third, San Francisco 49ers got both when they followed up after the touchdown with an interception thrown by Russell Wilson, intended for Sidney Rice.

The 49ers were well on their way after a run by Gore set them at the goal line, but Alex Smith threw an interception in the end zone with 11:30 remaining in the fourth. Seattle started at their own 5. Their first play of the drive was fumbled, but it was recovered and they maintained possession. They eventually went 3 and out on 3rd and 4 with a dropped pass by Marshawn Lynch. It seemed like a reverse effect. In the first half, Seattle dominated the run then SF controlled the run in the second half.

49ers had another shot after Frank Gore put them at the goal line again halfway through the end, but they struggled to finish in the red zone settling for a field goal bringing the score to a 13-6 lead. It was enough to win in their first divisional match of the season.
