New York Jets: Hitting Recurrent Turbulence

The New York Jets are a NFL team struggling to revamp their league swag. They were overrated when they hired Coach Rex Ryan, who was to be a guru of defensive schemes. Granted they've had good defense in cornerback, Darelle Revis and other key players. The Jets even signed quarterback Brett Favre in the 2008 season and failed to land a spot in the playoffs, finishing 3rd in the AFC East with a 9-7 season record. After Favre played one season there and returned to the NFC to play his final years of professional football with the Minnesota Vikings, NYJ signed rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The media hype followed Sanchez for a while during his rookie season, and the headlines on NFL Network once read, ‘King of New York.’ NYJ met the New York Giants in a 2011 week 16 regular season faceoff, which was to be a battle of the Kings of New York. They lost to NYG. They made it as far as the AFC Conference Championship  i2009 and 2010 playoffs and lost to Indy Colts (2009), New England Patriots (2010), and haven’t returned to the playoffs since. At the rate they’re going for the 2012 season, offseason hopes doesn’t look promising.

In the 2010 season, the Jets signed currently retired running back Ladanian Tomlison, who had a winning season with a 2006, 14-2 San Diego Chargers team that couldn't capitalize in the offseason. Now in 2012, what is wrong with the New York Football Jets?

Revis has been out with an injury. There has been talk about the QB debate with Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez. Some have said Rex Ryan would be a better defensive coordinator than head coach. Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress, who saved the Giants in Super Bowl XLII with his TD catch after David Tyree’s helmet catch kept the Giants alive, even signed with the Jets in 2011. Signing Burress wasn’t enough to help them win a title. In 2010, they brought in WR Santonio Holmes, who also saved the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII with his famous TD catch in the final minutes of the game.

New York Jets have a rivalry with the New England Patriots. After losing in overtime to the Pats in week 7 on 10/21/12, the Jets now have an overall 51-52-1 record versus New England in regular season contests per @nyjets.

Rex Ryan will never have Bill Belichick status as a coach. Besides Belichick's cheating scandal in the Patriots 16-0 season, he still has coaching wisdom that Ryan can't match. The Jets are rotating their propellers like someone who is just spinning their wheels and not making significant progress. They have certainly made it through the concourse, through the runway and off the ground, but they are having rocky flights, turbulence and problems reaching their destination; a Vince Lombardi trophy.

New York Jets are now 3-4, 3rd in AFC East.
