Kansas City are Chief of the AFC West
@nategrayzone
The most successful Kansas Chiefs team was in the era of
quarterback Joe Montana, and running back Marcus Allen. The year was 1993 when
they finished 11-5 and advanced as far as the AFC Championship game, but lost
to the Buffalo Bills, who went on to lose their 3rd Super Bowl
appearance in that postseason.
They’ve had some more playoff appearances and good season
records since then within the mid 1990’s and early 2000’s, but this 2013 Kansas
City Chiefs team has been turning heads!
They are headed by former Philadelphia Eagles coach, Andy
Reid. The Chiefs has been making constant improvements and upgrades to their
team, but this 2013 season was perhaps a bit surprising and unexpected.
Going into week 10 of football, their bye week, they remain
undefeated (9-0). Their top competition and only threat is their divisional
opponent, Denver Broncos, who they will face in Mile High upon their return.
Denver Broncos, led by quarterback Peyton Manning, were undefeated until they
lost their first game to his former team, Indianapolis Colts.
Kansas City and Denver will challenge for the first time in
2013 in week 11, November 17 for Sunday Night Football.
The Chiefs have quarterback Alex Smith, wide receiver Dwayne
Bowe, as well as running back Jamaal Charles and linebacker Justin Houston,
both in the top 5 performers according to espn.com. KC has an impressive league
best in holding opponents to 12.3 points per game. It will be interesting to
see how well their defense can contain the Broncos who lead the league in
offensive points per game, 42.9.
Unlike the 2012 Broncos (13-3) that lost to the champion
Baltimore Ravens in the divisional playoffs, the Chiefs will have a better
success rate in this postseason. The 2012 Broncos were expected to win it all,
and they are expected to go all the way again this year, but they are in for a
surprise either from the Kansas City Chiefs or another opponent.
The 2013 Kansas City team are the Chiefs of the AFC West.
