A Winning Perspective for NBA Season Opener: Author/Speaker Nate Gray on Dorell Wright/Delon Wright

A few years back in summer 2012, I gave a speech for the Propops Father's Day Celebration in Miami, and I had the opportunity to meet 11 year NBA veteran Dorell Wright, currently playing in China.

He was cool and seemed as humble as the advice he gave in the article, "Letter to My Younger Brother."

There were some good points by Dorell, to his brother, Delon Wright, newly drafted NBA rookie point guard for Toronto Raptors. When I read it, I said, "That's A Winning Perspective!"

A part of my message, A Winning Perspective is about how you choose to respond to your challenges in life, and learning from your experiences and making things work for you.


In this article, Dorell tells Delon how he handled some of his experiences as a pro athlete struggling in the beginning, having a slow start in the NBA.

Dorell stated, “I went from coming into a young team where I thought I’d play 20-30 minutes a game, to playing 159 total minutes over my first two seasons.”

He hardly had any playing time and was hurt behind it. How did Dorell respond to this to be able to continue his career, and progress to become a better player in the NBA?

Wright said, “But I had great vets around me:” Then he referred to a host of players as he mentions the advice he got from them as teammates. Wright also stated, “I learned that over my first few years, sitting at the end of the bench watching those guys.”

A Winning Perspective here is: rather than to lose focus and hope, or give up early in his NBA career, Dorell Wright continued to push, and because of his perspective, he was able to learn something out of not getting the playing time he expected through his first two seasons.
