Inspiration Learned from Ice Cube and Barbershop Cast at VH1 Taping in March 2016

It was an honor to join Sway and VH1 along with the Barbershop crew for a behind the scenes taping in Chicago back in March 2016.
Tune in to VH1, 10pm Eastern, 9PM Central, “Behind the Movie: Cast of Barbershop Discusses Challenges Living in Chicago 4/11/16
It was great to hear all the stories from the single moms in Chicago, young men who have turned their life around from the streets to doing something positive and helping other youth, and just open discussion on the barbershop atmosphere. Actress Regina Hall related directly with the women on their experiences with having girl talk in the beauty shops. Some young ladies from Chicago shared how they didn’t have that someone to look up to and talk to about their issues, so the beauty shop was their place for refuge.
Cedric the Entertainer, Anthony Anderson, and especially Deon Cole were the jokesters. Common, a Chicago native, represented the Chi well!
Somewhere in there between a commercial break, I had the opportunity to speak briefly with and meet Ice Cube and Sway Calloway. I was inspired by the energy of positivity from Ice Cube and the humbleness in Sway, along with his jokes and personality in between taping. Sway also mentioned he loves Chicago, has a lot of friends here, and that he is from Oakland, and Oakland shares similarities with Chicago from community living to political issues.
Of all topics that were discussed, one thing Ice Cube shared that stuck with me is the fact that he talked about not worrying about what people say and just continuing to do you and follow your dreams.
A part of my message, A Winning Perspective (new book coming soon) is about having a positive energy and friends, a positive mindset and overcoming adversity to make opportunities and live your dreams. Ice Cube made a statement during the show that I said was A Winning Perspective.
I don’t recall the exact verbatim quote, but he said something like, “I remember a lot of people saying stuff back in the day trying to hate on me, but I don’t hear anyone saying too much of nothing now!" It was so visual what he said because you can clearly see where he is in life now. Beyond the words he stated, I was moved by his positive energy and the conviction in how he said it.
