Demand for Release of Police Shooting Video of 15 year old Michael Westley in Motion
In my experience over the years of networking with people as a speaker, most of it was done outside of my home city. I realized that as a citizen of Chicago, helping my city means facing the issues that we have in Chicago. It is almost impossible not to get involved with the issues of the gun violence and police brutality and all going on in the city.
This is why I supported William Calloway in Monday’s press conference outside of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office on the fifth floor at City Hall. Calloway is responsible for having the police shooting video of Laquan McDonald released, and is now helping a family to have the video released of 15 year old Michael Westley, who was killed by Chicago police in 2013.
I spoke with reporter Marcele Cartagena of LaRaza.com, online news publication for Hispanic Engagement Solutions. I shared briefly my personal story of being mauled by a police dog of canine patrol in a case of mistaken identity during a police encounter at a point in my life. You can read more on this story in a free chapter of my new book coming soon, A Winning Perspective.
I was asked about police discrimination against Hispanics and if I think William Calloway will succeed in getting the video released. I responded, “I think Will and citizens of Chicago has made progress collectively as a whole in working together and fighting for unity and a better day in our city, and I think he is progressing further in what he is doing now for the family of Michael Westley. I can't speak for how the Hispanic community is as I am in Chicago in my community, but am aware that we are the minorities. You can read the full article from LaRaza online newspaper here.
William and I have worked together and met a few years back as mentors for Project Hood in Chicago. I support my city as the people come together. We can help one day at a time. It is a work in progress.
