Well off established entrepreneur's such as Shark Tank's Daymond John will even advise you not to quit your day job to pursue your dream as he told CNBC in this article.
If you are ready to be your own boss, but you are someone working or employed in Corporate America saying these things like, I feel stuck in my job, I want to quit my job, I want to work for myself, or I am tired of working for someone else, I know how you feel! Hang in there! Don’t quit your day job!
Here are 3 ways you can still pursue your dreams while you work your day job and make it work for you.
I know as a published author, national speaker, and current work from home (virtual job) expert and shareholder for a global Fortune 500 corporation, with more than 10 years of experience in Corporate America.
1. Fund Your Business/Invest In Yourself- As obvious as this may sound, your day job can be instrumental in helping you fund your business or your dream job. Besides paying your bills or maintaining your family or lifestyle, you can use your job to invest in yourself and fund your business. When you are unemployed with overhead expenses, it can complicate your focus and affect you giving your full energy to your dreams. You can read more about my ups and downs in Corporate America in my new book, A Winning Perspective.
2. People Skills/Networking Skills: In my tenure of working in Corporate America, I’ve had direct interaction with C-level executives, managers, customers, and other company executives. As a networking expert meeting many types of people in my lifetime, I’ve only enhanced my networking skills, people skills, and overall communication skills through my job . You can also read more about networking skills in my new book available now. Having these skills help to leverage your networks and business opportunities.
3. Learn How Businesses Work/Learn How to Start a Business: Companies are in business to make money and stay in business. Businesses are tasked with providing a need, maintaining and growing their business, attracting partners and investors, and staying relevant. Someone such as yourself, who is an entrepreneur wanting to pursue their dream full time, can learn a lot from the company you are working for right now. Take a look and see what is your company’s mission? What is the focus they are sharing with employees on the company direction etc? Look at some of the things they are doing and see how you can learn from them as you will someday be your own company.
To top all of this off, no successful entrepreneur today is going to encourage you to quit your day job anyway. I met author and speaker Lisa Nichols, who went from public assistance to Wall Street. When someone told Lisa they wanted to quit their day job and pursue their dreams, she said, “Do not quit your day job. You do not get any entrepreneur medals for quitting your day job.” You can also read more on this in my new book, A Winning Perspective, available now.
